This annual, two-day event occurs the third weekend of September and involves nearly 100 re-enactors and volunteers who are dedicated to preserving the history of Fort Bayard. Over 480 school children attended the event on Friday. The classes were treated to 28 "stations of living history" throughout the parade grounds, including minding your manners, listening to a bugle and fife, churning butter, history of the Indian Wars, watching a blacksmith, Native Amercian animal hide tanning, and gunfights. Visitors to the Fort on Saturday were treated to tours of the grounds and buildings, speeches on various historical and Native American topics, and more gunfights courtesy of the Salt River Rangers. A full military ball closed out the event on Saturday night. Fort Bayard was established in August of 1866 because early settlers, miners and folks trying to get across New Mexico to California were having problems with Apache Indians. The fort was build near what are today Santa Clara and Bayard.
